These two end tables represent the relationship between fungus and its effects on wood through the decomposition process. In order to preserve the stunning resulting grain patterns and colors, the tops of the table were immersed in epoxy to harden and preserve the fragile structure of the wood in its existing state. After absorption of multiple coats of epoxy, it is carefully sanded to the end result which is a beautiful, durable, waterproof, stain resistant surface. The legs supporting the table were crafted from alder slabs. These were also exposed to moisture for part of their life, but not to the extent of the tops. They remain structurally sound and also showcase unique grain patterns throughout, thanks to fungi. They are finished with a clear Rubio Monocoat application. All the wood used is from timber on our property, milled with an Alaskan sawmill, and brought to form in my home shop on-site. I like to incorporate copper when pieces allow so if you look closely you may find subtle traces. I love creating beautiful things and hope it finds a spot in your home, business, or place of your choosing.
